  30.   If your computer requires parity RAM, then that is what you must use.
  31. There is no speed difference, or other performance differences, between
  32. the two.

  34.   What parity RAM does is include an extra bit (chip) which does a
  35. comparison of the value in ram.  If it doesn't match, it triggers an
  36. error message, and halts the machine (on a PC-clone).  It doesn't fix
  37. the problem, merely stops the computer (locking it up) to prevent any
  38. further errors.  You then must have the RAM hardware checked & fixed.
  39.  
  40.   However, RAM errors are pretty uncommon, tend to result in random
  41. crashes anyway, RAM tests exist which can be done periodically to find
  42. problems, and a parity test doesn't do anything to fix the problem.

  44.   Lots of machines run fine without having parity RAM, errors are so
  45. uncommon (astronomically rare) that it really doesn't do anything for
  46. most people in real life.  But again, if the computer requires it in its
  47. design, you have to use it.
  48.  
  49.   A 2:1 cost ratio isn't so common though.  Maybe you should shop around
  50. some more for RAM; a 10-20% difference is all that is justified; for
  51. SIMMs, it means having 9 memory chips rather than 8 (usually, or 3
  52. rather than 2; 2 big, 1 small ram).
